He often says that, because he’s averse to copying, he does things his own way to try to be original and by the power of his work he wants to show he’s unique. And he is. Aged just 20 he registered a patent for a brand that came from the far-off year of 1928, becoming the youngest player ever to score a hat-trick in a Portuguese international shirt (in his fourth international match) and simultaneously became the first FC Porto player to score three goals in an official match for Portugal.
Unique and different from other players who have the mission of being goal scorers, André Silva (born in Baguim do Monte, 6 November 1995) is much more than just an immobile no. 9 who simply puts the ball in the net: he’s also a versatile and flexible no. 10 who, with his head always up, invariably looks for the best solutions, making use of a refined playing style, a calculating technique, above-average tactical intelligence, good reading of the game, skilful dribble and a very, very high work rate.
Today, he’s no longer the introverted 6 year old who came to Salgueiros, which lead to his parental choice for football. Today, he’s not even the 15 year old adolescent who, after spells at Boavista and Padroense, came to FC Porto as a creative midfield player or winger. He’s a mix of all this because, being worked as a striker, he knew how to keep all the qualities that in the past saw him nicknamed the little Deco. He’s a striker, yes; he has a swift easy shot, yes, with both left and right foot; he has a killer instinct, yes; he’s powerful in one-on- one situations by the strength of his technique and his physical power, yes; but he also has incredible mobility, knows how to play with his back to goal, also uses changes in speed to put opponents off balance, can hold the ball up like few others, he also incessantly looks for space, organises the midfield and plays out wide, he’s also powerful in the air, is a fighter and has an excellent work rate. And along with all this, he’s also a perfectionist and he’s also humble. That’s why André Silva is different. And unique
